A luggage porter reveals why you should never tie a strap to your suitcase

When we travel, we all share the same fear: that our suitcase will go missing, get stuck in transit, or, worse, be mistaken for another traveler’s. To avoid this scenario, many people attach a colorful ribbon, scarf, or small, easily recognizable accessory to their luggage. At first glance, it seems clever… but according to John, a longtime employee at Dublin Airport, this widespread practice is actually a bad idea disguised as a good one.

And his explanations might make you change your habits before your next trip.

Why is tape really a problem?

For John, the answer is simple: the belts can interfere with the automatic system that scans luggage before it is loaded into the cargo hold. These machines, which are very fast and particularly sensitive, need to read the barcodes without any obstacles.

When a piece of tape, a bulky key chain, or even an old sticker is placed in front of the scanning area, the machine stops. As a result, the suitcase must be checked manually, which slows down the process… and can even result in the bag not being allowed to board the plane.

A simple decorative addition can therefore turn an ordinary trip into a less scary one at the airport.

Should you travel with a completely “anonymous” suitcase?
